Cf. ‘axe’. The modern Hidatsa form is from wiʔ ‘stone’ + pca ‘sharp’.

The form recorded by Washington Matthews is wa-absolutive-i- ‘instrumental’ -pca ‘sharp’. In uncompounded form, Hidatsa has apca.
