Cf. ‘shine (2)’, ‘shine (4)*šą•, *xą•. Mandan šą́ši ‘smooth’ may ultimately be related to this set. If Crow fits here (Proto-Siouan *s > Crow t /__a), then Hidatsa must be a borrowing from Crow. Proto-Siouan *s appears as Hidatsa c. The borrowing, if it occurred, happened prior to the change k > č in Crow.
