Cf. ‘dry (1)’; ‘sand (1)’. We reconstruct an anomalous accent/length pattern.
‘sand (1)’ appears to be an -he final stem. ‘sand (2)’ may also be. The Hidatsa
form appears to be an old nominalization (with suffixal -ka) from
pu•xE ‘crush fine, grind’ (see ‘crush (1)’). At the very least,
we should suspect contamination from this verb of an inherited noun.
